FEATURED INSTALLATION:
Moraine Park Amphitheater
Rocky Mountain National Park

Estes Park, CO - This summers events at the Moraine Park Amphitheater in Rocky Mountain National Park took on a decidedly new look and sound this year with the complete renovation of the facility. Western Slope Pro Audio, Inc. was selected to design and install the new sound and control system as well as supply the new video screen for the project.

According to Scott Ikier – President WSPA, Inc. "A number of key functions and features were required, and we worked very closely with park officials on their requirements, expectations, and budget.

Due to the various uses and performances that take place all week during the summer, we needed to design a flexible and user friendly system to accommodate the many different people who would be using the system."

Initial design work and coordination was done with the Architect to ensure a functional design that included conduit layouts, speaker locations, etc. Things were made easier by the fact that the entire facility was redone from changing the grade for seating to new buildings, benches, electrical, and walkways. Jeff Maugans with the National Park Service was the primary contact and Owner Representative and we worked very closely with the requirements he envisioned.

A new projection booth was built that houses the equipment rack for the sound and control systems as well as the Owner supplied slide projection equipment. Two Kodak slide projectors with dissolve unit are used for most programs, with control integrated into the Crestron system we installed.

All sources are automatically mixed with the Shure SCM-810 automatic mixer. By automatically mixing input sources we greatly reduce any system noise that could enter through normally open microphones. Recorded program may be played through the system from either CD or cassette tape. A Marantz PMD-350 independent combination deck was installed for this purpose.

A Sony UHF mainframe system was installed and originally installed with two channels of body-pack lavalier mics. The Active Antenna system was installed at the projection booth and during testing we achieved 350+ feet of range with no audible dropouts or artifacts. A third channel handheld was installed during our fall closeout visit to the site.

The Crestron control system we specified provided an RF touch-screen remote for complete control of the audio levels, source select, slide projection, and future stage lighting control. All necessary programming for the control

system was done in-house at WSPA, Inc. Danny Kinimaka, Installation manager handled all the programming and site coordination.

XLR connection panels were installed on the stage to accommodate the handheld-wired Shure SM58 supplied in our design, as well as providing a connection location for performers that bring in their own instruments or mixing systems.

Technomad outdoor speakers were specified for this installation in large part for their extremely rugged construction. The speakers will remain outdoors year-round, so it was necessary to install a system that will handle the harsh winters in the park. The system included the fully gasketed lid that renders the system completely watertight for the off-season. In addition to the rugged design the NOHO C model chosen provided the exact horizontal dispersion required to cover the seating areas.
