Western Slope Pro Audio, Inc.
Montrose, CO has installed two audio systems in the recently
constructed St. Clare of Assisi Catholic School
in Edwards, CO.
The new building houses the K-6 grade classrooms and
features a new gymnasium that also serves the congregation
for their worship services.
The classrooms each received an in-ceiling speaker that
provides paging access to the classrooms as well as the
daily class signal tones. An Applied Technical Systems
master clock was installed that provides multi-schedule,
multi zone signals for all class changes.
A TOA A-906MKII mixer/amplifier was installed and provides
access for paging and includes a tone control module that
generates the class change bells in the classrooms and
a TOA M-900MKII mixer/preamp was installed for the gym
and locker room paging system.
Apogee Point 5ProT speakers were installed in the gym
for class signals and paging capability. The internal
70-volt transformer were tapped at 30-watts each to ensure
adequate level.
A Peavey IPA300 power amplifier was installed to power
the gym and locker room zone. With the gymnasiums multi-function
design requirement a full-range sound system was required
to handle both sporting event announcements and the worship
services.
Acoustic design was handled by Dennis Fleischer, Ph.D.
whose company MuSonics works with their clients to ensure
that the room is as acoustically flat as possible. Gymnasiums
are notoriously "bad" acoustic environments,
but with proper treatment sound systems can be made much
more intelligible.
With the wall treatment installed we were able to concentrate
on coverage and intelligibility. For these reasons a pair
of Apogee AE-2s2 loudspeakers were chosen.
The AE-2 provides exceptional audio quality and the horizontal
dispersion of 165 degrees. According to Scott Ikier,

Apogee AE-2s2 Installation |
President of Western Slope Pro Audio, Inc., "This
speaker has worked very well for us in other gym installations.
Typically the only areas that do not receive direct sound
coverage are under each basketball stanchion and the jump
circle."
The speakers were installed over the center court area
with one covering the bleacher side of the gym and the
other the player benches and announcer’s table. The Apogee
P-2 processor was installed which uses a sophisticated
signal processor unique to each model of loudspeaker,
phase filters, frequency response filters, limiting for
driver protection, distortion canceling circuitry, and
other techniques that dramatically improve the response
of each system. Shure DFR11EQ’s were used to tune and
balance the room.
Power for the main speaker system was provided by a Mackie
Designs M-2600 power amplifier. The M-2600 design is very
flexible and offers numerous adjustments that aid in tuning
the speaker system.
To accommodate the multiple use requirements of the gym
a Whirlwind 16-channel snake cable was installed from
the equipment cabinet to the announcer table location.
A multi-connector was installed in a wall plate allowing
the snake to be removed and stored when the sound system
is not used.
From this location microphones and instruments may be
plugged in for the worship services and mics or audio
sources for sporting or other events.WSPA, Inc. is the
regions only full-service professional sound, video and
control system design-build company, with over 37-years
