Montrose,
CO – After many years of planning and anticipation
St. Mary Catholic Church in Montrose moved into
their new 1,000-seat church in September 2001. Western
Slope Pro Audio, Inc designed and installed the new sound
system for the facility.
The Sanctuary was designed to include 320 degrees of
seating so a central cluster design was chosen for the
main speaker design. Five-Apogee AE-3 loudspeakers and
two SSM speakers were installed for the main and down
fill systems.
Model specific equalization, limiting, delay and crossover
for the speaker system was provided by the Apogee D-1
Digital Processor with 26-band EQ.
A custom fabricated cluster rig was built at WSPA’s shop
in Montrose and was primed and installed ready for painting
by the paint contractor.
All new components and equipment were provided for the
new building with the exception of a Sony WRR wireless
receiver system that had been installed in the old church
in 1998 by WSPA. The wireless system included two-channels
that were then expanded to five channels for the new building.
The modular design of the Sony mainframe made the expansion
very simple and cost effective. The Sony active antenna
system was installed to ensure that no area in the Sanctuary
would prohibit use of the wireless microphones.
All speech microphones from the wireless system were
routed through a Peavey Automix microphone mixer. The
Automix provided the hands-free operation we were looking
for in this system and automatically turns mics on and
off as they are addressed. The Automix master output was
then sent to the main mixing console for overall level
adjustment.
The main equipment rack included the Apogee D-1 processor
and Automix mentioned above along with power sequencing/conditioning,
power amplifiers, EQ’s, and the remote room mixer/amp.
A Raxxess KAR series rack was installed in the Mechanical
Room and was fitted with storage drawers for the wireless
transmitters and front and rear locking doors.
Two-Shure DFR11 EQ’s were installed to provide system
feedback control, room tuning and balancing. The DFR11
offers a wide range of functionality including feedback
filters and a 30-band graphic or 10-band parametric EQ
configuration with digital delay. One DFR11 was used on
the Main AE-3 speakers and one for the SSM down/front
fill speakers.
Power for the main speaker system and stage monitor speakers
are provided by Mackie Designs power amplifiers, a combination
of M-800, M-1400, and M-2600 amplifiers were installed. |

Central Cluster at St.
Mary Catholic Church |
Power sequencing and conditioning
is provided by Furman mini-ports and a PS-Pro. Remote
power on/off was located in the main Front-of-House mixer
rack. Two-house mix locations were designed, each fitted
with a Whirlwind multi-connector providing one simple
connection to connect the mix rack to the main system.
When an operator is available for services the HSA roll
top rack may be located at the rear of the room, when
sound needs to be run from the front the rack easily relocates
to the choir/band area.
A Horizon Stage Series audio snake
was installed to allow connection of all microphones and
instrument sources used by the choir and band. The connection
plate for the audio snake also featured a Whirlwind multi-connector
(different size) to make connection with the sound system
as user-friendly as possible.
A Mackie Designs SR 24*4 mixing
console was installed in the HSA rack along with a Marantz
PMD-320 CD player and PMD-520 independent dual well cassette
deck.RackRider RR-15’s provides power conditioning for
the house mix rack, additionally, the remote power switch
for the systems main power was installed in the HSA mixer
rack.
The microphone package for the
Choir and Band included two-Shure SM-81 microphones for
overhead choir and/or instrument miking and eight-SM-58’s
for vocal and instrument use. A compliment of Ultimate
Support stands was included with the microphone package.Four-Klipsch
KI-172 8" two-way wedge monitors provide stage monitors
for band and choir members. A custom connection panel
was installed near the band for the four monitor sends.
The Gathering Area features a
high (15 ft) ceiling and for this area, WSPA chose two
SoundTube 360 degree dispersion in-ceiling speakers. The
SoundTube speakers provide excellent coverage for the
area with minimal visual impact in the space. The delay
speaker system was powered by a Peavey UMA75 5-channel
mixer/amplifier.
The hearing assist system is the
Listen Technologies 216-mHz frequency agile system. The
system was installed with four personal receivers and
accompanying over-the-ear-speakers.
